Kane County was one of 42 teams eliminated from affiliated Minor League Baseball after the cancelled 2020 season. Previously a member of the Single-A Midwest League, the Cougars joined the American Association for the 2021 season. The franchise is operationally the same club as their affiliated past, but retains no on-field link to pre-2020.
If anything, the club is the on-field successor to the St. Paul Saints, hiring longtime Saints manager George Tsamis and his coaching staff after they forced to leave St. Paul when the Saints joined the Minnesota Twins farm system for the 2021 season.
