The southernmost team in American Association history, the Lemurs came into being in 2012, setting up shop just a few miles away from the Rio Grande. The club was successful immediately, winning a division title in their debut season and contending their entire five-year existence, including a surprising 2015 championship run. In fact, Laredo did not suffer a losing season in their existence, the only AA club that can say that.
However, after strong attendance numbers in their debut season, fan support steadily eroded, bottoming out at less than a quarter of their 2012 patronage just four years later. In the winter of 2016-17, Lemurs ownership and the city tangled over legal issues. A resolution in late April resulted in one part-owner receiving the team…and the other receiving the ballpark lease. With finances already in peril, the club almost immediately folded less than three weeks before the 2017 season began.
