Following the 2002 season, a 35-year run of Double-A Texas League baseball in Shreveport ended as the Swamp Dragons moved to Frisco, Texas. However, the Central League swooped in immediately and the Shreveport Sports were founded for the 2003 campaign. After three seasons, the club was one of five surviving CL franchises that helped found the American Association.
After six years of okay results and poor attendance, the franchise changed their name to the Captains and also added neighboring Bossier City to their location name in 2009. In their second year under the new name, the squad claimed their only American Association title. However, immediately after the title run, it appeared that the Captains would move to Amarillo, though the Pensacola Pelicans moved instead, keeping the franchise in Louisiana for another summer. The Captains, though, were sold to interests in Laredo, Texas in the fall of 2011 and the club moved to South Texas the following year.
