The Diablos were founded immediately after the Texas League club of the same name relocated to Springfield, Missouri after the 2004 season. After one season, the independent Diablos were one of five Central League franchises to help found the American Association.

Despite trotting out some of the worst pitching staffs in league history and regularly finishing at the bottom of the standings, the Diablos took advantage of the largest stadium in the league, regularly finishing near the top of the league in attendance, including a still-standing single-game league record of 13,516 fans on July 4, 2012. With the continued success of the club, a new ballpark and a new Triple-A franchise were announced in the fall of 2012 for the 2014 season. After a lame-duck 2013 season, the curtain closed on the Diablos as they cleared the stage for the El Paso Chihuahuas.
