One of the first two expansion teams in American Association history in 2008, the AirHogs set up shop between Dallas and Fort Worth and immediately found success, knocking off crosstown rival Fort Worth to reach the AA Finals in their inaugural season, then winning an AA crown three years later. As late as 2013, Grand Prairie was a division champion. However, things quickly went south on and off the field as attendance nosedived and by 2015, the club became the first 70-loss squad in AA history.
For 2016 they merged with another struggling club in the Amarillo Thunderheads, assuming the Texas AirHogs identity. After splitting ’16 between Amarillo and Grand Prairie, the club stayed permanently in the Metroplex. However, attendance stayed low and the on-field results were abysmal, including an infamous arrangement that stocked the AirHogs with predominantly overmatched Chinese players in 2018-19, leading to two more 70-loss seasons. After sitting out 2020, the franchise officially folded that winter.
