On a cool, windy night in Milwaukee, conditions were ripe for pitchers to thrive with the wind howling in from left field—which was exactly what happened. However, Kansas City’s arms were just a little bit better.

Milwaukee started AA Pitcher of the Year Jhordany Mezquita, who set down the first seven men he faced. Kansas City put two on with two out in the third, though, and Austin Callahan dunked an RBI single into left-center to score the first run of the night.

The game stayed 1-0 into the sixth, when the Monarchs scratched across another tally. With two on and one out, Onix Vega lined an RBI single to left-center that knocked out Mezquita after 5.1 innings of two-run ball.

Kansas City starter Sawyer Allen, meanwhile, was even better. He scattered four hits with five strikeouts over the first 6.0 innings, with his only difficult task being to strand a leadoff double in the third.

In the seventh, though, Allen threw five straight balls before exiting with the trainer. Two more walks followed after the pitching change, loading the bases with no outs. Emmanuel Chapman came on, though, and induced a strikeout and two fielder’s choices to turn back the threat, as the Milkmen came up empty.

Tyler Myrick and Durbin Feltman each allowed one baserunner in scoreless eighth and ninth frames, respectively to close it out as the Monarchs took a 1-0 lead.
