The Pelicans were founded as one of the few potentially viable organizations in the Southeastern League, a loop that lasted just two seasons and was on life support the entire time. Finding a more stable home in the Central League after the SEL folded, after two years in the CL the Pelicans were one of five clubs from that circuit to help found the American Association.
In 2010, Pelicans owner Quint Studer orchestrated a convoluted deal that involved relocating two affiliated minor league clubs (Carolina and Kinston) and compensating a third (Mobile) for territory rights, along with a ballpark deal for a new facility to open in 2012. After the 2010 season, Studer sold the Pelicans to a group in Amarillo and the club relocated, while the Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos began operations in 2012.
