The St. Joe Blacksnakes were a franchise that was never supposed to exist, and perhaps the results were indicative of that fact. When the American Association announced their inaugural lineup in the fall of 2005, four Northern League defectors and five Central League ex-pats were a part of the fray, with one more team needed. That club was announced to be playing in Manhattan, Kansas. The problem? No one in Manhattan was apparently consulted (much less signed off on that). A few weeks later, St. Joseph, Missouri was selected as the backup option.

The Blacksnakes were competitive in their debut season, but they were saddled with a small market and a ballpark that was by far the oldest in the league and well below professional standards. Attendance was bad in year one and as the team fell off in 2007, the club drew what is still the lowest single-season attendance in AA history (excluding 2020’s shortened, capacity-restricted season). The club quietly folded that fall after just two seasons of operation.
