With Milwaukee waiting, the war for the West was waged (and was moved up to avoid bad weather). Kansas City (barely) got it done to reach the Miles Wolff Cup Finals for the fourth time.
Kansas City 10, Fargo-Moorhead 9
Game 5 couldn’t have started any better for Kansas City, but that didn’t mean it was a smooth ride to the finish, as the Monarchs hung on for dear life.
On a windy day where the ball was flying, Luken Baker started the scoring with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first. The Monarchs kept adding, with a solo shot from Grant Richardson in the second and two more runs in the third, build a 6-0 lead.
Fargo-Moorhead joined the fun in the top of the fourth, as Matt Kroon launched a two-run home run to pull within four. Kansas City responded immediately, with Tyler Gentry ripping his fifth homer of the postseason to open the frame. Saul Garza added on with a two-run triple to open the lead up to 9-2.
The RedHawks truly began their climb back, though, in the fifth. Jose Sermo belted a 434-foot three-run home run, then Tripp Clark capped off a four-run frame with an RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, Hudson Head led off with a solo homer for KC’s final run.
The scoring finally slowed down as the bullpens restored some order in the later innings. Fargo-Moorhead did shave a run off the deficit in the seventh on a Tripp Clark RBI single, making the score 10-7.
KC still led by three in the ninth when Durbin Feltman retired the first two hitters before a single and a Tucupita Marcano home run closed the gap to one run. A single followed to put the tying run on base, but Feltman induced a fielder’s choice roller to set up the Monarchs’ date with Milwaukee.
