One of the first two expansion teams in American Association history in 2008, the Wingnuts were the AA’s first Kansas-based team. After a losing season in their inaugural year, Wichita made the playoffs for the first time in 2009 and ripped off eight playoff appearances in a nine-year span, including setting still-standing league records with six straight division titles and seven straight playoff appearances. Out of all that success, the Wingnuts only won a single title, in 2014, though they reached the Finals four times, including back-to-back Game 5 losses to Winnipeg in 2016 and ’17. All told, Wichita far and away holds the AA record with a .599 winning percentage all time.
The franchise also enjoyed solid attendance and the market emerged as an attractive affiliated target. Before the 2018 season, the city of Wichita paid the Wingnuts to break their lease following the season and tear down Lawrence-Dumont Stadium to build a new ballpark. As a result both the the Wingnuts and their ballpark went dark for good after 2018, with a new Double-A club, the Wichita Wind Surge beginning play in 2021.
