2023

Whether it be due to teams being displaced by new affiliated franchises, or simply going out of business, COVID-19, relocation, or expansion, the American Association had seen constant change almost from the day it was founded. However, 2023 was the first time since 2013 that the AA had fielded the exact same lineup as the year before, with all 12 teams coming back.

Fresh off a runner-up finish in 2022, Milwaukee claimed their first division crown, tying with Chicago, but taking the number one seed. Kane County filed in behind, while Lake Country seemed primed to earn a playoff berth in just their second season, they instead suffered maybe the biggest choke in AA history. The Hounds crashed and burned to a 3-14 finish, while Cleburne only went 6-11 in the same span, but managed to back their way in on a tiebreaker, taking the title of the worst playoff team (46-54) in AA history.

After being bounced in the West Division Finals in 2022, the Kansas City Monarchs claimed their third straight division title (fourth straight if you omit 2020), while Sioux Falls and Sioux City tied for second, with the Canaries finishing with their first winning record and playoff berth (outside of 2020’s shortened season) since 2010. Fargo-Moorhead was only one game behind the two Sioux’s, leaving KC with plenty of decisions for the first round draw.

Ultimately, the Monarchs chose (and swept) Sioux Falls, then came back from five runs down in the decisive Game 3 against Sioux City to win the West, while Chicago took down Cleburne and Milwaukee in a pair of series where the home team won all three games. Kansas City bounced back from a 16-inning loss in Game 1 of the Miles Wolff Cup Finals to win the final three games of the series and spoiling the Chicago Dogs’ first-ever trip to the Finals with a walk-off single in Game 4 from Brian O’Grady. The title was KC’s second title in three years and third since 2018, joining Winnipeg as the only AA clubs to win the Miles Wolff Cup three times.
