The Sox were born as part of the deal that brought Double-A baseball to Pensacola. With a new ballpark and the arrival of affiliated baseball in 2012, the existing Pensacola Pelicans were sold to a group based in Amarillo, Texas and the club was relocated after the 2010 season. The team was originally due to be named the Gold Sox, the historical moniker of many Texas League entries previously housed in the city, but the threat of a lawsuit from a club in California (Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox) forced the name to be shortened to just Sox.
After being renamed the Thunderheads in 2015, the team merged with the Grand Prairie AirHogs and the newly re-christened Texas AirHogs split the 2016 season between Amarillo and Grand Prairie. The AirHogs returned solely to Grand Prairie in 2017 and the Thunderheads went dark for good. Texas is considered the surviving organization of the merger.
