The Canaries are one of two charter members of the Northern League’s 1993 season still in operation in an independent baseball league (also Sioux City), tying their rival Explorers for the title of the oldest franchise in modern Indy ball history. However, the Birds did field a team in the American Association’s abbreviated 2020 season, making them the only Indy ball team in North America to continuously field a team each year since 1993, now playing their 34th season. From 2010-12, the Canaries rebranded as the Pheasants (sometimes called “Fightin’ Pheasants”). After three seasons, the club returned to their original moniker, which it maintains to this day.

Sioux Falls has been a losing club for most of their history, reaching the playoffs just four times in their first 30 seasons and enduring nine straight losing seasons in the 2010’s. However, the franchise did hoist the Miles Wolff Cup in 2008 and has enjoyed playoff berths in each of the last four seasons, half of the club’s all-time total.
